About Maha Kumbh Mela Prayagraj

The Maha Kumbh Mela, an integral part of Indian tradition, is renowned globally as the largest peaceful congregation of people. The festival is a testament to the human quest for divine and spiritual liberation, representing the belief in freedom from the continuous cycle of birth, death, and rebirth. This gathering allows millions of devotees to immerse themselves in the holy waters of Ganga, Yamuna, and the mystical Saraswati, symbolizing a purification of the soul and, as believed, a path to attaining Moksha or liberation. The legend behind the Maha Kumbh Mela is that during Samudra Manthan or the churning of the ocean, a pot of amrita (nectar) emerged from the ocean. Whoever drank the nectar became immortal. So the Devas and Asuras fought with each other for this pot of nectar. And while Lord Vishnu taking the form of Mohini Avatar, carried away the Amrit Kalash (pot of nectar). Some drops fell at Haridwar, Prayagraj, Nashik and Ujjain. Finally Maha Kumbh Mela is held at these places to celebrate this legend. Last Maha Khumbh Mela was hosted by Prayagraj in 2025.

Magh Mela is held every year in the month of Magh (January–February) at Prayagraj. It is considered an annual mini-Kumbh. Bathing during Magh month is considered very sacred in Hinduism. Pilgrims perform Kalpvas (staying in tents for a month for spiritual practices). Important for charity, yajnas, and religious rituals. Lakhs to millions of pilgrims, mainly from nearby regions.
