The Department of Mathematics came into existence w.e.f., 1st April, 2003, prior to this it constituted a section of the Department of Applied Mathematics, Applied sciences & Humanities. The department offers core courses at undergraduate level and several advanced courses at post graduate level. The department also enrols candidates for Ph.D. programme. There is a wide spread interaction between mathematics department and various engineering departments in the field of teaching and research. The department of Mathematics started full time M.Sc. in Mathematics & Scientific Computing program since 2008 and full time B.Tech in Mathematics & Scientific Computing program from 2026 onwards.
Prayagraj is one of the oldest cities in India. It is crowned in ancient scriptures as ‘Prayag’ or ‘Teertharaj’ and is considered the holiest of pilgrimage centres of India. It is situated at the confluence of three rivers- Ganga, Yamuna and the invisible Saraswati. Known as Purimtal in ancient Jain scriptures, it is also a sacred place for Jains, as their first Tirthankar, Rishabhdeva attained Kevalya Gyana here. Akbarnama mentions that the Mughal emperor Akbar founded a great city in Allahabad. Prayagraj is also known as the "Prime Minister Capital of India", since, seven of fifteen Indian prime ministers of India since independence have connections with the city. Prayagraj is an international tourism destination, second in terms of tourist arrivals in the state after Varanasi. Religious attractions include the Kumbh Mela, the Triveni Sangam and All Saints Cathedral. The city hosts the Maha Kumbh Mela, the largest religious gathering in the world, every twelve years and the Ardh (half) Kumbh Mela every six years.
